Press Release - AFOS Calls For Calm

27 June 2009

Merely 48 Hours after agreeing to terms and saving the future of Formula One, the agreement appears on the brink of failure after FIA President Max Mosely took exception to comments made by Luca de Montezemolo in regards to the terms of the agreement and Mosely's own future in the FIA. Mosely has threatened to reneg the deal and it has been suggested that the break away series may well be reconsidered.

The Alliance Of Formula One Supporters would like to remind all those involved that the sport is bigger than one person, indeed, it's bigger than one persons ego, and we urge Mr Mosely that if he has a problem with something Mr de Montezemolo has said, then to discuss the issue, in private, with Mr de Montezemolo, and not with the media. To wake up this morning and read that the sport may well be torn apart again just when it looked like the rift was closing is devastating for the fans who, at the moment, are in continual state of flux and apprehension as to whether or not the sport, as we know it, will even exist beyond next season.

AFOS would like to remind the FIA and FOTA that it is us, as fans, that keeps this sport running, and if this continual search for the upper hand and this ego-fuelled desire to have the last word does not end soon, these groups risk alienating all fans to a point where we may very well stop following the sport in preference to less controversial series. We have all had enough of this political turmoil dominating F1 headlines - we want to hear about the racing, the drivers, car developments, about someone tossing their toys of of the cot because his or her feelings got hurt. We are all grown ups here, let's behave like them.

AFOS urges the FIA to backtrack on its current comments and aim to resolve these things quietly, outside of the public eye, and not resort to the public insults that have already elevated this dispute from a simple disagreement into a full-scale war. The fans demand to be heard, and we are saying, in fact, we are screaming, that this has gone on for far too long. It is time for people to keep their personal opinions to themselves and focus on the fact that, hopefully, there will be a Formula One World Championship next season that includes all this seasons big teams.

Our frustrations are reaching boiling point, it is time for this to end. If the sport requires certain people to leave their current posts, then so be it, for the good of the sport, some need to realise that the needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few.

So please, let's just all calm down, keep the treaty on the table and concentrate on the racing.

Thankyou
Alliance Of Formula One Supporters
