Press Release - Stance On Breakaway Series
21 June 2009
After last weeks announcement of a break away series, AFOS felt it was important to make its own stance clear to all members and interested parties.
AFOS does not openly support the forming of a "breakaway" championship, as we feel that it dilutes the championship and puts the future of the entire series in unnecessary jeopardy. However, we support FOTA and their stance on a clearer, more transparent governing body and a fairer financial distribution system. What we here at AFOS feel is that this stoush between the FIA and FOTA is damaging the sport, possibly beyond short term repair, and what we are seeking is first of all, the cessation in hostilities between the FIA, FOM and FOTA and secondly, that ideas, thoughts and concerns of AFOS, and therefore the fans of the sport, be taking into account when re-writing the regulations that get us out of this quandary.
For too long, egos and inflexibility have torn this sport apart. We now have rifts between teams on the very running of the sport, we have warring factions, with one seemingly unwilling to yield, and more bizarrely, trying to win the argument by threatening legal actions. We have a championship where the very racing itself is being ignored in favour of the ongoing battles, but most of all what we have are people clearly unwilling to see common sense and compromise, for the good of the sport.
AFOS calls upon the FIA to soften its stance on the Budget Cap issues, and go into negotiations with FOTA without the steadfast stand that they must sign up to next seasons championship before any changes will be made. Clearly, this is not something that is going to be resolved without compromise, so for the good of Formula One, and might I add the FIA is the eye of the public and F1 fans everywhere, we implore you to sit at the negotiating table and talk with out the premise of legal action or steadfast standing of rules. On the part of FOTA, we ask that you do not give up on Formula One, and that you still treat the "breakaway" series as a last resort. Whilst we understand and share your frustration, we feel that Formula One is a brand worth saving and protecting.
So allow us to reiterate. We ask that FIA soften its stance, we ask FOTA to continue working towards maintaining the Formula One World Championship, and we ask both, plus FOM, to consider involving AFOS, and fans around the world in general, during the coming phases of this dispute. We, as the most vital part of Formula One are asking to be heard.
Thankyou
Alliance Of Formula One Supporters
